Christmas in the Eyes of the Filipino Child

Christmas, or "Pasko" is the most awaited and the happiest event in the Philippines. This is the time of the year when families merrily get together, a gathering made especially meaningful when family members from overseas reunite with their loved ones and families bringing home their proverbial pasalubong. It is a long-standing custom that friends and relatives exchange gifts while swap fond memories of years past. A major highlight is the Christmas Day feast, done either at the stroke of midnight or anytime during the day in a reunion full of thanksgiving and cheer.

But, what makes the Filipino Christmas truly unique? The immediate, knee-jerk response to this is that Filipinos observe such staple Christmas tradition such as displaying the Parol (in commemoration of the Star of Bethlehem that led the Three Magi towards the Christ-Child), the Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo that culminates with the Midnight Mass on the eve of December 25th, otherwise known as the Misa de Aguinaldo, the almost incessant caroling of neighborhood children, the monito-monita or Kris Kringle giving an apparent reference to the European Christmas gift-giving tradition, and partaking of the traditional Christmas Eve feast or Noche Buena. These are all the traditions that make us, Filipinos, different from the rest of the world.

Christmas is primarily celebrated for the children. It is in this context that the Employees Coordinating Council (ECC) thought it relevant to have as this year’s Christmas Theme, “Christmas in the Eyes of the Filipino Child”. Admittedly, Christmas is the time when adults can rekindle past familial magical moments which may be done only through the eyes of the pure-hearted Filipino child. Christmas through a child’s eyes is one of the most beautiful things in the world, filled with joyous anticipation and gladness further illuminating the already Christmas lights-filled and parol-adorned surroundings, adding an extra upbeat to every Christmas Carol we hear, and to make all the good food that prepared on our tables even more delectable. But, most important of all, Christmas through the eyes of the Filipino Child heralds a message of hope, peace and anticipation that things will always be better and brighter tomorrow.

In whatever manner we choose to celebrate the Christmas Season, we are sure that everyone will still discover the joy in appreciating the simple gestures of kindness and spreading of good cheer. Perhaps, it may well be a noteworthy suggestion that we take a moment to reach into our inner child and rediscover the true meaning of Christmas – as seen from the Eyes of the Filipino Child.

MS. NORMA G. WAGAN, Nursing Assistant: ACHIEVEMENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY,
and for SERVICE AND DEDICATION

The Model Employee of the Year is an annual award given to an employee who has exerted extra ordinary efforts in the performance of their duties, and have exhibited dedication in the pursuit of the institution’s goals and objectives. This year’s roster of candidates were all deserving but the MANCOM, after the series of consultations and deliberations, decided that the most deserving of the award for exemplary dedication in service and in embodying the goals and objectives of the hospital belongs to MS. NORMA C. WAGAN, of the Nursing Division.

Ms. Wagan, fondly referred to by colleagues as “Kakang Norma”, hails from Tanauan City. She was born on October 15, 1949 to a simple Filipino family. She started her schooling at the Tanauan Elementary School, before going on to the Tanauan Institute for her secondary education. She went on to finish her course in Midwifery (with honors) at the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in 1972, then passing the Board Examination for Midwifery the following year.

Her work experiences cover a wide range both here and abroad. She was at one point connected with the Sto. Tomas University Hospital in Manila and went on to work overseas to as far a place as Isfahan and Teheran, Iran. After finishing her employment contract abroad, she decided to return to Tanauan to work with us, as well as to spend quality time with her family.

Here at DMMC, she was initially hired as a contractual CSR Staff to augment our strained workforce in that area before eventually becoming a Linen Custodian.

Because she consistently showed her dedication to rendering good and reliable service, while manifesting a keen sense of attention to detail and teamwork, she was appointed as a regular Nurse Assistant in 2002. Since then, she has sustained her commitment to her work for which she is placed in high esteem by her colleagues and fellow team members. This wholehearted and devoted delivery of service has also been acknowledged by management as proved by her having obtained a solid track record of multiple high ratings of “Very Good” and “Excellent” in her most recent Performance Appraisal ratings. Together with her superb timekeeping record for which she has been found to be a consistent Perfect Attendance Awardee, she is a real testament to unyielding service to the hospital and its customers.

All of these rightfully earned her the accolade and for which she is now aptly awarded the Achievement Award as Model Employee of the Year 2009. Rightfully so, the citation says it all, “In recognition of achievement above and beyond the call of duty, service and dedication to this institution”.

SUCCESSFUL HOLDING OF ANNUAL EMERGENCY & EVACUATION EXERCISE

Last September 10, 2009, the Daniel O. Mercado Medical Center successfully conducted its 2009 Emergency and Evacuation Drill. This culminating activity was effectively undertaken after a series of consultations conducted by the Facilities and Maintenance Division, in cooperation with the other areas of the hospital and local government offices like the Fire Department and the City Administrator’s Office. DMMC was able prepare and finalize its Emergency Preparedness and Response Manual which became the basis for the action and reaction undertaken in response to the scenario posed before the emergency preparedness team.

Because of the close coordination and compliance to the hospital’s evacuation protocol, employees who participated in the mock evacuation successfully evacuated the hospital and proceeded to the designated assembly area well within the standard evacuation period set by the local and national building codes.

We salute the team leaders who effectively led their teams, and the “heroes” who eventually brought the “injured” to the assembly point. We look forward to next year’s exercise, at which time we will aim to improve our evacuation and emergency response.
