DMMC Launches 5S Program By Peter Rhyan Lopez
DMMC embarks another milestone as we celebrate our 50th founding anniversary last June 28, 2007 at the DMMC Institute of Health Sciences. This is indeed a remarkable event as we commemorate the legacy of our founder, Dr. Daniel O. Mercado, to his fellowmen. A true story of success from a family owned clinic up to a tertiary level corporate health care institution, the only of its kind in Tanauan City, Batangas.
As we enter into the new era of globalization the question is “Are we prepared to accept and face the challenge of competition especially now that our government is promoting the medical tourism here in our country?”
Competitions became very tough due to the advancement in technology and varying needs and expectations of our sophisticated market. To be able to stay in business, we need to have a competitive advantage over our competitors. The winning formula that brought us to success previously might no longer effective at present, that’s why, coincide with our golden anniversary celebration, the organization has taken another big leap to be able to improve the quality of services that we provide to our clients. And that is the “Institutionalization of Total Quality Management or TQM as a way of life to anticipate world class certification”- and to start with, 5S Program was launched.
The 5S launching highlights an Audio- Visual Presentation (AVP) showcasing the talents of volunteer employees from different field of endeavor. The presentation starts when an irritated and confused woman (Ms. Delia Nono) enters the scene asking for a miracle on how she can improve efficiency, work organization, quality, safety and housekeeping in her work area. She was totally down when 5 unknown individuals came from nowhere and introduced themselves as the FANTASTIC 5S. Each of them has an extra-ordinary ability and represents the five (5) pillars of 5S namely: SURIIN (Mr. Marco Antonio Ilagan), SALANSANIN (Ms. Mary Grace Libang), SINUPIN (Mr. Jeff Cabungay), SISTEMA (Ms. Analyn Villegas) and SARILING KUSA (Mr. Peter Rhyan Lopez). Using their powers, the FANTASTIC 5S helps the woman in improving the workplace.
The Audio-Visual Presentation was made possible thru the combined efforts of Ms. Maricar Chao (Script Writer), Mr. Marlon Malaluan (Video and Audio Editor), Ms. Glady Herella (Costume Designer), Mr. Efren Carandang (Talent Scout), Mr. Peter Rhyan Lopez (5S Concept), Dr. Jose V. Tecson III (Director and Camera Man) and Ms. Arlene Ledesma (Adviser).
Total Quality Management or TQM is a method by which management and employees can become involved in the continuous improvement of the services rendered to our clients. It is a combination of quality and management tools aimed at increasing business and reducing losses due to wasteful practices. 5S is only one of the major components of TQM and is considered as the most basic among all improvement activities. When fully implemented, 5S will improve the quality of work life through a clean and organized working environment and allow us to achieve the following gains: (1) improves service delivery, (2) improves quality, (3) reduces costs, (4) makes delivery on time, (5) improves safety, (6) improves morale, and (7) develops human resources by improving creativity, communication skills human relations, teamwork, esprit de corps, etc.
Through the institutionalization of Total Quality Management, we can now be assured that we are prepared and well- equipped to face the challenge of competition. So let us all support the 5S program to achieve Total Quality Management. Who knows, this will lead us on our way to achieve our goals and hopefully to reach our 100 years or more of continuous service to the communities we serve.
